Invisible Wounds of Youth: When Trauma Lingers

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) can have a tremendous impact on future violence, victimization, perpetration, lifelong health, and career opportunities. ACEs don’t have a single cause and can take several different forms. Many factors contribute to ACEs, including personal traits and experiences, parents, the family environment, and the community itself. To prevent ACEs and protect children from neglect, abuse, and violence, it’s essential to address each of these factors. To that end, the Columbus Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in partnership with the Helping Families Initiative through the Russell County District Attorney’s Office, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, and Good Health Wins, is hosting “Invisible Wounds of Youth: When Trauma Lingers,” on Saturday, May 11, 2024, 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM ET, at South Girard School, 521 Fontaine Rd., in Phenix City, AL, 36869. The event is geared toward middle and high school children and their caregivers. There is no cost to attend, and lunch will be provided. The keynote presenter is Brett Murphy-Dawson, MD, Board Certified Pediatric and Adult Psychiatrist and Trauma Informed Advocate. Events will include a joint session with adults and youth addressing trauma risk and resiliency factors, sessions with youth who will be separated by age groups and gender, support resources, and vaccine education.
